Free Comic Book Day 2019- Our comic book haul

Free Comic Book Day!

As you lovely lot all probably know last Saturday was Free Comic Book Day and I was excited! I always end up missing these things and having to get a friend to pick me up some goodies! But this year I braved the wind and the multiple men in their 40s pushing the small girl out of the way and picked up some really cool things!

So let’s kick off this haul in no particular order!

First Free Comic Book pick up- Under the Moon: A Catwoman Tale

Written by Lauren Myracle

Illustrated Isaac Goodhart

When 15-year-old Selina Kyle, the girl who will grow up to be Catwoman, becomes homeless, she must confront questions of who she is and who she will become.

This is a sneak peek at the new Catwoman graphic novel which came out this week, I’ve heard uhhh mixed reviews but I’ll give this little preview a go!

Dear Justice League

Written by Michael Northrop

Illustrated by Gustavo Duarte

Does Superman ever make mistakes? What was Wonder Woman’s eleventh birthday like? Does Aquaman smell like fish? In this new middle-grade graphic novel, iconic heroes are asked questions both big and small.

I picked this one up for my little sister simply because it just looked cute and the type of thing she can just flick through, she’s only six so just likes to study each picture! I’ll probably end up reading it myself as well because it just looks adorable, it features two chapters from the graphic novel which is out in August!

Avengers #1

Written by Jason Aaron

Illustrated by Stefano Caselli

This new Avengers comic sets the stage for Endgame alongside a brand new dynamic with the Savage Avengers.

I’m a simple girl, I see Captain Marvel and Thor on a comic and I pick it up. I’m really intrigued by this one especially as I’m still in such a post Endgame funk!

Lumberjanes: Shape of Friendship

Written by Lilah Sturges

Illustrated by Polterink.

When the Lumberjanes discover the hiding place of a group of magical creatures called Pookas, they think they’ve found new friends. But what they don’t know is that the Pookas are tired of hiding.

If you read my graphic novels TBR way way back you’ll know that Lumberjanes was on that list so of course, I had to pick this up! It seems like such a nice way for me to get to know the characters until I eventually read the graphic novels!

Doctor Who: The Thirteenth Doctor

Written by Jody Houser

Illustrated by Giorgia Sposito

Jump aboard the TARDIS with Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor and her companions, a perfect introduction to the hit new series where readers leap through time and space in a fun, fast-paced adventure!

I mean do I need to explain why I picked this one up? I mean it’s pretty self-explanatory if you ask me!

Pokémon I Choose You!

Written Ryo Takamisaki

Illustrated by Hidenori Kusaka

When Ash Ketchum oversleeps on his 10th birthday, he ends up with a stubborn Pikachu instead of the first partner Pokémon he wanted!

We all know and love the first series of Pokémon and this comic is an adaption of the film I Choose You which was made for the 20th anniversary and basically sums up that series in one (pretty emotional) film! It’s great! Go watch it on Netflix!

Stranger Things & Black Hammer

Written by Jody Houser

Illustrated by Ibrahim Moustafa

Stranger Things: Eleven and the Demogorgon have disappeared from Hawkins.
Black Hammer: Madame Dragonfly takes the reader on an EC-style tour through her mysterious Cabin of Horrors

I’ll be honest, I haven’t heard of Black Hammer and just picked this up for Stranger Things (who is else is so excited for the next season) but I’m excited to give Black Hammer a read nonetheless!

Spider-Man

Again….pretty self-explanatory!

Overall Free Comic Book Day was a nice fun morning although pretty nerve-wracking and annoying at times – I dress stereotypically ‘girly’ if that’s even a thing so sometimes going to comic book shops can be so daunting so this was just another level!

Did you visit your local comic book shop? We’d love to see what you picked up!
